JULY PROGRAM
The Bedford Rifle Grays Camp #1475 will rendezvous at the Bedford Central Library Bedford Room at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, July 29, 2003. We will have Robert Maxham and his son, a period musical team, entertaining us.. Come out and enjoy! Don't miss this opportunity to hear authentic Southern period music accompanied by period instruments. The monthly regular camp business session will of course be conducted also.
AUGUST PROGRAM
The August Meeting will be at the Bedford Central Library Community Room on Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at 7:00 PM. An interesting guest speaker, Rev. James Henry, retired pastor of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Bedford, is scheduled for the meeting. Rev. Henry is a life-long student and enthusiast of the events of the 1860's and is a native of Georgia. He officiated at the period wedding at the Historic Meeting House during Living Liberty Days on July 11. Mark this date and time down as a reminder and plan to be with us.
PAST/COMING EVENTS
Our membership is at 117 at this day [July 21] and we need to continuously be recruiting new people who are eligible. Numbers give us more "clout" and we need clout badly. In the latest "peecee" insanity an "activist and his cohorts are planning on placing statures of 14 Black Union soldiers who participated in Grant's assaults on Richmond in 1864-1865! Can anyone name a city that has erected monuments to its conquerors before? This is just another assault on the culture and heritage of Richmond, Virginia, and the South.
Thanks to every member participating in the "Living Liberty Days-Bedford in the 1860's" celebration over the weekend of July 11-13. The UDC, Stuart Horse Artillery, and the Bedford Rifle Grays supported this opportunity offered to us by Bedford Mainstreet to promote our cause publicly and provide an educational and entertaining time for all of Bedford's people. All proceeds for ticketed events went to the Museum and its projects. These opportunities that come our way are relatively rare and so it was somewhat of a disappointment to me as regards the "sparse" turnout of our camp membership for this unique event. We can do much better.
Raffle tickets are ready for the 1863 Sharps Carbine [54 Cal.], selling at $2 a ticket. This is the camp's sole and only source of funds for the coming year [we keep only $1 for each member re/enlistment, the rest goes to national and state]. So, help us sell these 2000 tickets. The rifle costs us $564 and should prove a great sell and a great prize. Single-handedly, Gene [Nathan Bedford] Forrest Arrington sold over $200 worth of these tickets at Avenel on Saturday, July 12, during the Living Liberty Days. Come to the meeting this month and hear Gene explain his successful techniques of salesmanship.
